Third online testimony - Darko Fischer - December 1 2025
The third testimony session focused on the story of Darko Fischer, a Holocaust survivor from the Balkans whose experience illustrates both survival and post-war commitment.
Born in 1938 in Osijek into a secular Jewish family, he survived the Shoah through exile and hiding in Bosnia and Hungary.
After the war, he pursued an academic career in electrical engineering and computer science in Zagreb, eventually becoming an associate professor.
Beyond his professional life, he became deeply engaged in Jewish communal work, serving as president of the Jewish Community of Osijek and later of B’nai B’rith in Zagreb.
He also contributed to historical research and publications on Jewish life in the region.
His testimony offers students and Young NESHAMA ambassadors a valuable insight into Jewish history in the Balkans, as well as a lifelong commitment to combating antisemitism and preserving memory.
